Vappu, osa 1/1st of May, part 1

Vappu sujui meillä aika perinteisen kaavan mukaan. Olemme jo vuosien ajan kokoontuneet Lintuvaaraan vappu aattona, yleensä puutarhajuhlien merkeissä. Emäntämme on ollut aika tarkka siitä, että ulkona todella vietetään alkuilta, satoi tai paistoi. Nyt jouduimme kuitenkin tekemään poikkeuksen. Sää oli niin hurja, että jopa paatuneimmat ulkona istujat hakeutuivat sisätiloihin. Ilma oli aika kolea ja tuuli oli todella kovaa ja puuskittaista. Sen hetken kun ulkona oli, sai pitää kiinni huivistaan ja kuohuviinilasistaan, jottei tuuli niitä mukaansa tempaisi. Helpottuneena siemailimme siis kuoharia ystäviemme olohuoneessa eikä ulkona terassilla.

Iltapäivä oli kuitenkin aurinkoinen ja tunnelma sisällä oli siis melko keväinen.

Vappu on myös perinteisesti avannut omalla kohdallani grillauskauden. Illan isäntä valmisti kahden sorttisia makkaroita grillissä ja lisukkeena oli - jälleen perinteisesti - perunasalaattia. Eipä siinä muuta tarvita kuin vähän sinappia ja täydellinen vappu-ateria on valmis.

Tämän vapun erikoisuus oli kosher viini! Näin sitä sattumalta Helsinginkadun Alkossa (kaiken maailman paikoista) ja oli ihan pakko ostaa pullo vapuksi (Sion Creek White,503157, 0,75l 10,48€). Viinissä olikin erikoisempaa juuri kosher-aspekti, ei niinkään maku. Ihan ok perusviini mutta kympillä saan kyllä jotain muutakin aika hyvää viiniä. Silti, oli hauska ostaa pullo. Ainakin se kirvoitti keskustelua!

Tein jälkeen tippaleipiä, tällä kertaa aikamoisen satsin. Koska juhlintaa oli tiedossa kahdelle päivälle, paistoin tiistai-iltana 60 tippaleipää! Hyvin öljyinen urakka. Mutta aika kivasti homma kyllä hoitui.

Ja aika kivasti tippaleivät tekivät kauppansakin! Herkut hävisivät niin nopeasti parempiin suihin, että en meinannut saada niistä edes kuvaa.

Näin tuli ensimmäinen osa vapusta juhlittua. Olimme superreippaita ja matkasimme kotiin julkisilla. Joskus on nimittäin ollut ihan mahdotonta saada taksia vappuna. Kyllähän se julkisillakin sujuu se kotimatka. Tosin matka Lintuvaarasta Arabianrantaan kesti tunti ja viisitoista minuuttia (jos riittääkään), joten toki taksi on nopeampi - jos sellaisen vain saa.

Vappu was celebrated in a pretty traditional way this year. We've spent Vappu Eve in Lintuvaara for years now, usually having a garden party outside. Our hostess has been quite strict about at least spending the beginning of the evening outside, come rain or shine. Now, however, we had to make an exception. The weather was so mad, that even the most hardened garden party people had to find shelter inside.  The weather was quite chilly and the wind was very hard and came in strong gusts. During the very brief period we spent outside, you really had to hold on to your hat and especially your champagne glass so the wind would not snatch them. In relief we sipped sparkling wine in the comfort of our friend living room and not outside on the terrace. 

But luckily the afternoon was sunny, so the atmosphere indoor was very spring-like.

Vappu has also traditionally meant the beginning of the grill season for me. The host prepared two different kinds of sausages in the grill and we had potato salad on the side - also very traditional. You really don't need anything more but a bit of mustard and the perfect Vappu- meal is ready.

This Vappu's specialty was kosher wine! I saw some by chanse at the Helsinginkatu Alko (of all places) and I just had to get a bottle for Vappu(Sion Creek White,503157, 0,75l 10,48€). The fact thet the wine was kosher made it more interesting than the actual taste. It was an ok basic wine but for 10 euros I can get some other kind of nicer wine. But still, it was fun to get the bottle. At least it provoked quite a bit of debate!

I made funnel cake again, a fairly large batch this time. Because there would be two days of partying, I deep fried 60 funnel cakes on Tuesday evening! A very oily job. But in the end it went quite nicely.

And the funnel cakes went down very nicely too. The goodies disappeared so quickly that I almost didn't have time to take a picture of them.

And so part one of Vappu was celebrated  We were super-brisk and made our way home by public transport. Sometimes it has been quite impossible to get a cab at Vappu. Getting home with public transport is doable. It did however take us an hour and fifteen minutes to get from Lintuvaara to Arabianranta (at least), so of course a cab is much faster - if you can just get one.
