Käsin koristeltu pöytäliina/Hand Decorated Tablecloth

Selaillessani netissä kuvia -  ja etsiessäni jotain aivan muuta -  löysin sattumalta kuvan, jossa oli käsin piirretty pöytäliina. Tai ainakin oletin, että se oli käsin piirretty pöytäliina. Voi olla, että kyseessä oli ihan jotain muuta - kuva oli hyvin pieni, eikä kovin tarkka - mutta sillä ei enää siinä vaiheessa ollut väliä. Olin päättänyt, että kuva esitti käsin piirrettyä pöytäliinaa ja saman tien päätin myös, että tekisin itse sellainen blinijuhliin.

Surfing the web looking at pictures - and searching for quite something else - I came across a picture of a hand drawn tablecloth. Or at least I presumed that it was a handdrawn table cloth. It could be, that it was something quite different - the picture was very small and not very sharp - but by that time it didn't matter. I had decided that the picture was of a hand drawn tablecloth and I immediately decided I would make on for the blini party.

Tabula rasa

Löysin Tiimarista paperipöytäliinaa rullassa - ja vielä alennuksella. Kymmenen metriä pöytäliinaa sai yhdeksällä eurolla. Ainoa varjopuoli oli se, että paperin pinta oli röpelöinen. Olisin mielelläni ottanut sileäpintaista paperia, mutta asialle ei mahtanut mitään. 

Rullassa oleva paperi oli leveämpää kuin pöytä, joten leikkasin paperin varovaisesti oikean levyiseksi. Seuraava vaihe oli pelottavin: suuri pala tyhjää, valkoista paperia. 

I found a roll of paper tablecloth at Tiimari - and on sale too. Ten meters of tablecloth cost nine euro. The only down side was, that the surface of paper was structured. I would have preferred a smooth surface, but there was nothing I could do about it.

The paper in the roll was wider than the table, so I carefully cut the paper to the correct width. The next stage was the scariest: a big piece of empty, white paper.

Ennen kuin aloitin, päätin kuitenkin tehdä suunnitelmasta luonnoksen muistikirjaani. Se olikin hyvä asia, koska lopulta seurasin luonnosta aika tarkkaan ja se auttoi työskentelyä todella paljon.

Before I started, I decided to make a sketch of the plan in my notebook. That was actually a very good thing, because in the end I wound up following the sketch very closely and it helped working very much.

Välineiksi valitsin mustan  Promarker- tussin ja punaista tekstiiliväriä. Loppujen lopuksi käytinkin vain tussia.

I chose a permanent Promarker and textile paint as tools. In the end I only used the marker.

Tein vielä pari koevedosta tussilla, ennen kuin aloitin. Ja se oli oikein hyvä asia se! Totesin, että ohuempi tussin pää on paljon parempi. Koska paperin pinta tosiaan oli röpelöinen, ei leveämpi viiva näyttänyt kovin hyvältä. Ei ainakaan pöytäliinassa.

I made a few test with the marker before starting. And that was a very good thing to do! I realized that the narrower end of the marker was much better. Because the surface of the paper was structured, the line made with the wider tip didn't look very good. At least not on a tablecloth.

Sitten ei auttanut muu kuin aloittaa varsinainen työ, jos sen meinasi tehdä! Aluksi piirsin keskelle liinaa ympyrän kevyellä lyijykynäviivalla suurehkon, pyöreän lasikulhon avulla. Siitä muodosti "kranssi" keskelle pöytää, josta kukkivat oksat sitten lähtivät rönsyilemään. Aluksi viiva tuntui haparoivalta mutta hetken päästä vapaalla kädellä piirretyt viivat alkoivat saada ryhtiä ja loppua kohti piti jo varoa liian rentoa jälkeä ja liian villisti rönsyileviä oksia. 

Enkä mahtanut sillekään mitään, että kun koko liina oli piirretty täyteen ohuella viivalla, kaipasin hieman paksumpaa viivaa sinne tänne, jotta jälki ei olisi niin litteää. Joten vastoin kaikkia hyviä neuvoja, joita piirtämisestä koskaan olen saanut, lähdin vahvistamaan osaa viivoista. Se kyllä elävöitti jälkeä hieman, mutta täytyi varoa, että tämäkään asia ei olisi mennyt överiksi.

Then there was nothing for it but to begin working, if it was to be done! First I drew a circle in the middle of the tablecloth using a big glass bowl and a light pencil stroke. That made a "wreath" in the middle from which the blossoming branches then grew and rambled. At first my stoke felt unsteady but after a while the freehand strokes began to get rhythm and towards the end I had to be careful the line didn't get too relaxed or that the branches wouldn't ramble too wildly.

And I couldn't help it, that when the whole tablecloth was filled with a narrow line, I needed to put some thicker strokes here and there, so that the lines would not look too flat. Going against all the good advice I have ever received on drawing, I started strengthening some of the lines. It did animate the drawing a bit, but I had to be careful not to overdo it.

I never did use the red textile color. That would certainly have been overdoing it.

Lopputulos oli aika kaunis, varsinkin kun katoin pöytään lasilautaset, joiden alta pöytäliina näkyi läpi. Onneksi käytin tussia, joka ei liukene veteen, koska heti kättelyssä pöytäliinalle kaatui lasillinen vodkaa. Illan aikana sille kaatui varmaan muutakin. Kun yöllä sitten pikku hiljaa siivoilin vieraiden lähdettyä, en kuitenkaan millään raaskinut vain rutata pöytäliinaa kasaan ja heittää sitä roskiin, vaikka sitä ei uudestaan olisi voinut käyttää. Viikkasin sen nätisti ja laitoin sen muistojen arkkuun.

The end result was quite pretty, especially as I lay the table with glass plates and the tablecloth could be seen through them. Luckily I had used permanent marker, because from the word go a glass of vodka was spilled on the tablecloth. I'm sure much more was also spilled on it during the evening. When I was clearing away after the guests had left, I couldn’t bring myself to scrunch up the tablecloth and throw it away, even though it could not have been used again. I folded it up carefully and put it in our chest of memories.
