Keväinen Ilallinen/Spring Dinner Party

Viime lauantaina vietimme illan ystäviemme luona Herttoniemessä keväisen illallisen merkeissä. Sää tosin ei ollut keväisin mahdollinen. Päivällä oli ollut melko kaunista ja lämmintä, mutta kun pääsimme Herttoniemeen, nousi aivan valtava tuuli - lähes myrskytuuli - ja pian taivas pimeni ja alkoi sataa rankasti.

Ehdimme kuitenkin syödä alkupalat terassilla ennen myrskyä.

Last Saturday we had a spring dinner at our friend's home in Herttoniemi. The weather was not very spring-like thought. It had been pretty nice and warm during the day, but when we got to Herttoniemi, a very strong wind rose - almost a storm - and soon the sky darkened and it began to pour rain.

We did, however, have time to have starters on the balcony, before it started to rain.

Savuhirvipäällyste rieskan kera oli valtavan herkullista! Erityisen ihanan vivahteen maulle antoi tuore timjami.

The smoked moose spread on flatbread was so delicious! Especially the fresh thyme gave the overall taste a wonderful nuance.

Parvekkeelta on aika mahtavat näkymät. Tässä vaiheessa ei millään voinut kuvitella, että pian taivas muuttuisi harmaaksi ja vettä tulisi rajusti!

Yksi illallisen teemoista oli katsastaa ystäviemme uudet huutokauppahankinnat. Heillä on muutenkin paljon hienoja esineitä kotonaan, mm. vaikuttava kokoelma jugend kattokruunuja.

The view from the balcony is pretty magnificent. At this point you could not have guessed, that soon the sky would turm dark and there would be a downpour of rain!

One of the themes of the evening was to inspect the purchases our friends had made at auctions. They have many fine objects in their home, i.a. an impressive collection of art nouveau chandeliers.  

Illalliskattaus oli ihanan raikas ja keväinen. Tuomamme keltaiset ruusut sopivat siihen hienosti. Näköjään sekä vierailla että isäntäväellä on jo kova kaipuu kevään heleisiin väreihin kaiken talven pimeyden ja harmauden jälkeen.

The table setting for the evening was very fresh and verdant. The yellow roses we brought went perfectly with it. Apparently both the guests and the hosts already have a strong longing for the vivd colors of spring after all the grey and darkness of the winter. 

Pääruokana oli isännän valmistamaa herkullista kanipataa. Söin pari reilun kokoista annosta ja perunoita söin enemmän, kuin muistan varmaan koskaan syöneeni yhdellä kerralla! Kanipataan oli leikattu mukaan maksa, joka oli todella hyvää, pehmeää ja miedonmakuista (sain myös Sampan maksapalat, kuten arvata saattaa...).

The main course was delicious rabbit stew prepared by the host. I had two big helpings and I ate more potatoes, than I ever remember eating in one go! The rabbit liver was also cut up into the stew and it was very good, soft and mild (I also had Samppa's pieces of liver, as one may well guess...).

Jälkiruokana oli puolukkapiirakkaa. Kaikissa illan ruoissa oli hieno, suomalainen, metsäinen teema: hirveä, kania, puolukkaa.

We had lingonberry pie for dessert. All the dishes that evening had a Finnish, foresty theme: moose, rabbit, lingonberry.

Keskustelimme illan emännän kanssa kahviastiastosta. Hänen mielestään se oli auttamattoman kasarityylinen, eikä kukkakuvion hento vaaleanpunainen väri enää miellyttänyt. Toisaalta, astiasto on Villeroy & Bochin. Ja toisaalta tällainen 80-luvun kuvakieli on tavallaan valtavan nostalgista, vaikka astiaston ulkonäkö ei enää miellyttäisi niin paljon. Ainakin minä olen tällaisten astiaston säilyttämisen kannalla...jos vain kaapeista löytyy tarpeeksi tilaa...

We had a discussion about the coffee service with the hostess. She thought it was hopelessly 80's and the pale pink of the floral motif no longer pleased her. But on the other hand, the service is Villeroy & Boch. And secondly, this kind of 80's imagery is in a way hugely nostalgic, even if you don't like the appearance of the service so much anymore. At least I'm all for keeping dishes like this...if you can only find the space in your cupboards to store them...

Huutokauppahankintojen lisäksi ystäviemme kodissa on paljon hauskoja yksityiskohtia. Erityismaininnan saavat lasipurkit, joille on keksitty uutta käyttöä. Itselläni on ollut suurissa lasipurkeissa vaikka mitä vuosien varrella, viimeksi joulukuusenkoristeita odottamassa seuraavaa joulua. Mutta hylsyjä en ole aiemmin lasipurkeissa nähnyt (ystävämme harrastavat ampumista)! Erityinen lempparini oli se purkki, jossa oli vielä hylsyjen päällä jouluvalot!

In addition to the auction purchases, our friend's home has many fun details. I especially have to mention the glass jars, for which a novel use has been thought up. I myself have had all kinds of things in big glass jars over the years, last some Christmas decoration awaiting the next Christmas. But I have never seen shotgun shells in a glass jar before (our friend's hobby is shooting...)! My special favorite was the jar that also had Christmas lights on top of the shells!

Ilta oli jälleen mitä mukavin ja vierähti ohi aivan liian nopeasti, kuten usein ystävien luona käy. Suuntasimme puolenyön jälkeen kotiin, jossa vielä ehdimme nähdä telkkarista, kuinka Ruotsi otti jälleen Euroviisuvoiton. Heja Sverige!

The evening was again so nice and it came to an end much too soon, as usually is the case. We headed for home a bit after midningt and still had time to see Sweden yet again win the Eurovision Song Contest on TV. Heja Sverige!
