Idea synti eilen, Facebook-ystäväni käydyn keskustelun aikana. Ja keskustelu alkoi tästä kuvasta:

I am starting a new series of posts: Project Kalevankatu.

The idea was born yesterday, from a discussion I had with a Facebook friend. And the discussion started with this picture:

Eilen oli kaunis, aurinkoinen päivä - ainakin hetken. Kun palasin työhuoneelle lounaalta, oli taivas kuitenkin aika uhkaava. Tumma taivas ja auringonpaiste yhdessä oli upea näky, josta otin kuvan ja postasin Facebookkiin otsikolla "Stormy skies over Kalevankatu".

Pian kreikkalainen Fabook-ystäväni kommentoi kuvaa kertomalla, että on aikoinaan asunut Kalevankadulla, numerossa 26! Kreikkalainen ystäväni on itse asiassa Sampan entinen tyttöystävä ja muistinkin Sampan joskus maininneen, että Angela asui Kalevankadulla, en vain tiennyt talon numeroa. 26 on hyvin lähellä työhuonettani, toisella puolen Fredaa.

Koko Kalevankatu-aiheesta kehkeytyi keskustelu kadun ravintola- ja baariannista, joka on nykyään varsin runsasta. Angela kertoi, että kun hän asui kadulla (siis joskus 70-luvulla - kai...vai menenkö liian kauas taaksepäin...?) ei ravintoloita ollut lainkaan. No, tietenkin Kosmos ja Torni ravintola ovat olleet toiminnassa, mutta uskon kyllä, että aikoinaan kun Helsingin ravintolakulttuuri oli muutenkin köyhää, ei kivoja, rentoja ja edullisia ruokapaikkoja tai baareja pahemmin ollut, ei Kalevankadulla eikä muuallakaan. Nythän tilanne on aivan toinen ja pian alkaa jo olla niin paljon kaikkia kivoja ravintoloita, että on välillä vähän vaikeaa tehdä valinta niiden joukosta. Pelkästään sillä Kalevankadun pätkällä, jossa työhuoneeni on, eli Annankadun ja Fredan välissä, onneljä eri ruokapaikka ja yksi baari!

Heitin Facebook-feedissä, että pitäisi varmaan aloittaa Project Kalevankatu, eli käydä syömässä joka ainoassa ravintolassa ja drinkillä jokaisessa baarissa ko. kadun varrella. Idea sai heti kannatusta kreikan suunnalta ja myöhemmin myös Englannista, kaverin äidiltä. Joten ei tässä nyt auta muu, kuin uhrautua ja aloittaa herkullisten lounaiden, päivällisten ja maittavien drinkkien testaaminen Kalevankadun varrella. Kuinkakohan monta ravintolaa kadun varrella oikein muuten on...?

It was a beautiful, sunny day yesterday - at least for a little while. When I returned to the studio after lunch, the sky looked very threatening however. the combination of the dark sky and the bright sunshine was a spectacular sight and I took a picture and posted it on Facebook with the title "Threatening skies over Kalevankatu".

Soon my Greek Facebook friend commented on the picture by saying she had lived at Kalevankatu 26 back in the day! My Greek friend is actually Samppa's ex-girlfriend and I did remember Samppa once mentioning that Angela had lived on Kalevankatu, I just didn't know the number. 26 is quite near my studio on the other side of Fredrikinkatu.

A discussion about the restaurants and bars on Kalevankatu ensued and there are quite a few along the street nowadays. Angela said, that when she lived on the street (sometime in the 70's - I guess...or am I going too far back...?). there were no restaurants at all. Well, of course there was Kosmos and a restaurant in Torni Hotel even back then, but I can well believe, that back when the culinary culture in Helsinki was very poor, there can't have been many nice, laid-back and inexpensive food joints or bars here, not on Kalevankatu or anywhere else. Now the situation is completely different and we have so many nice restaurants, that it's sometimes even a bit difficult to choose among them. On the bit of Kalevankatu alone where I have my studio, in between Annankatu and Fredrikinkatu, there are four restaurants and one bar!

On a whim I suggested on Facebook, that I should probably start project Kalevankatu and go eat in every single restaurant and have a drink in every bar along the street. The suggestion was immediately supported from Greece and later from England from my friend's mother. So there is nothing for it now but to start testing and tasting delicious lunches, dinners and yummy drinks along Kalevankatu. I wonder how many restaurants there are along the street anyway...?

Aloitin projektin ravintola Domosta, joka on samassa talossa, kuin työhuoneeni. Domo on niitä harvoja japanilaisia ravintoloita Helsingissä, jossa saa muutakin ruokaa, kuin sushia. Domon sushi on kuulemma vertaansa vailla, mutta kun kerrankin on mahdollista saada muitakin japanilaisen keittiön antimia, on tilaisuuteen ehdottomasti tartuttava.

I started the project at Domo, which is situated in the same building as my studio. Domo is one of the few Japanese restaurants in Helsinki, where you can get other dishes too besides sushi. I hear the sushi at Domo is unequaled, but since it is possible to also order other Japanese culinary delights, one must absolutely take advantage of the opportunity.

Domon sisustus on todella pelkistetty, Sisään mennään oviaukosta, jossa roikkuu lyhyet onnenkissaverhot. Rimoista ja paperista rakennetut seinät jakavat tilaa ja rimateema jatkuu ravintolan seinillä, joilla roikkuu pari japanilaista maalausta. Tällä ei mitään Helsingin ravintoloiden design- palkintoa voiteta, mutta ei tarvitsekaan. Ruoka on pääosassa.

The decor at Domo is very simplistic. You enter through a door hung wit short lucky cat curtains. Walls made from thin laths of wood and paper divide the space. The lath theme is continued along the walls from which also Japanese paintings are hung. None of this will win the restaurant any design prizes, but that does not matter. The main focus is on the food. 

Päätin näin projektin aloituksen kunniaksi syödä kahden ruokalajin aterian. Alkuruoaksi valitsin merileväsalaattia ja shisho kastiketta. Lisäksi sain kulhollisen misokeittoa, joka kuuluu kaikkiin lounasannoksiin.

I decided to have a two-course meal to celebrate the start of the project. I chose a seaweed salad with shiso dressing as a starter. I also got a bowl of miso soup which is complimentary with all lunch dishes.

Salaatti oli kirpeää ja raikasta. Salaattiastian muoto oli sellainen, että päissä ei ollut reunoja lainkaan. Kun sitten siirsin astiaa syrjään syötyäni salaatin, sain valutettua suuremman osan astian pohjalle jääneestä salaatinkastikkeesta pitkin pöytää ja moppasin sen häpeissäni ja vaivihkaa serviettiini (joka oli tämän jälkeen käyttökelvoton). Tosin vanhempi miestarjoilija sitten valutti loputkin kastikkeesta pitkin pöytää, kun hän korjasi astian pois (jä hän ei kastiketta sitten pyyhkinytkään - pieni miinus siitä...).

Pääruoaksi valitsin häränlihaa ja sipulia domburi- kastikkeessa hörytetyn riisin kera. Pääruoka tuotiin pöytään hauskassa lakatussa "rasiassa". Lisukkeena oli pikkelssiä, jossa näytti olevan kiinankaalia, porkkanasuikaleita ja kurkkua. Ohut häränliha oli mureaa ja domburi- kastikkeessa oli makeutta, jota pikkellssi kivasti vähän rikkoi. Annos näytti aika pieneltä mutta osoittautuikin aika tuhdiksi. olin hyvin kylläinen, kun lopetin aterian.

The salad was sharp and fresh. The little salad dish was shaped so, that there were on edges at all at the edges. When I then moved the dish aside when I had finished the salad, I managed to drizzle most of the leftover salad dressing on the table and I mopped it up in shame with my paper napkin ( which was unusable after this). Although in a little while the elderly male waited drizzled the rest of the dressing on the table when he came to collect the empty dishes and he didn't mop up the dressing at all - a small minus for that...).

As the main course I chose beef and onion with domburi sauce served with steamed rice. The main course was served in a cute lacquered "box". There was some relish on the side which looked to be made with Chinese cabbage, julienned carrots and cucumber. The thing slabs of beef were tender and the domburi sauce had a sweetness that the pickle nicely cut a bit. The portion looked quite small but it turned out to be quite substantial and I was very full when I finished the food. 

Ravintolan henkilökunnasta ei tainnut kukaan olla japanilainen. He puhuivat keskenään kiinaa tai englantia, eikä suomen kieli myöskään taittunut osalta tarjoilijoista! Mutta onko sillä nyt niin väliä? Palvelu oli kovin ystävällistä.

Henkilökunta oli myös kovin luottavaista. Kun menin tiskille maksamaan lounasta, ei maksukorttini toiminut maksupäätteellä! Ystävällinen tarjoilija jopa meni kysymään joltain muulta asiakkaalta pöydässä, voisiko tämä kokeilla korttiaan koneessa. Asiakkaan kortti kyllä toimi mutta omani ei! Koska minulla ei tietenkään ollut käteistä (sitä pitäisi aina olla) ei toista korttia (sekään ei olisi huono idea) tarjoilija kysyi, voisinko ehkä käydä hakemassa käteistä pankkiautomaatilta. Tokihan minä tähän suostuin. Jos olisin ollut joku vilunkityyppi, olisin sisäisesti hihkunut riemusta ja häipynyt palaamatta koskaan. Mutta koska en ole vilunkityyppi, kävelin Kampin kauppakeskukseen kauheassa tuulessa ja rännässä, sain käteistä automaatista ja lampsin samassa kauheassa säässä takaisin Domoon maksamaan.

Palvelu oli siis todella mukavaa. Ruokakin oli hyvää. Ei mitään mielettömän huikeaa mutta lounaslistan antimet ovat kuitenkin varmoja ja hyvältä maistuvia annoksia. Pitää mennä Domoon joskus illalla, jolloin a la carte menu on laajempi ja valinnanvaraa on enemmän.

I don't think any of the personnel at the restaurant were Japanese. They either spoke Chinese or English with eachother. Not everyone spoke Finnish either! But does that really matter? The service was very friendly.

The personnel was also very trusting. When i went to the counter to pay for my lunch my card would not work! The friendly waiter went and asked some other customer at a table if their card worked in the machine. The customer's card worked but not mine! Because I of course had no cash (you should always have some) or another card (that's not a bad idea either) the waiter asked if I might go to a bank machine to get some money. Of course I would. Had I been a  dishonest person  I would have been screaming with inner joy and would have run for it never to return. But because I am not a dishonest person I walked to the Kamppi shopping center in horrible wind and sleet and got some cash from the bank machine and walked back to Domo in the same horrible weather to pay.

So the service was very nice. The food was good too. Nothing super spectacular but the dishes ion the lunch menu are all a sure and tasty bets. I must go to Domo in the evening sometime, when the a la carte menu is more extensive and there is more of a choise.
