Puumala

Pääsen vasta nyt kirjaamaan tänne blogiin pimuviikonlopun Puumalassa. Aikaa on kulunut jo neljä päivää ja viikko on kohta lopuillaan, juhannuskin on tulossa! Alkuviikko meni kyllä rehellisyyden nimissä toipumisessa ja sitten vain on ollut kaiken maailman hässäkkää, esim. suurisiivousta ensiviikkoisia 85-vuotis päiviä varten, jotka pidetään meillä.

Paras lähestymistapa Puumala- tarinaan on varmaankin taas "paljon kuvia, vähän tekstiä" metodi!

I only have time now to post our girl's weekend in Puumala. It's been four days and the week is almost coming to an end! I was recovering from the weekend most of Monday and Tuesday, to be quite hones and then there has just been so much to do, like super cleaning the apartment for the 85th birthday party we're having here next week. 

I think the best way to approach  this Puumala story is the "lots of pictures, less text" method!

Ystäväni on vuokrannut kesäksi mökin Puumalasta Saimaan rannalta. Jo ajaessamme Puumalaan, oli matkan varrella mahtavia maisemia, eivätkä maisemat mökilläkään huot olleet.

My friend has rented a cottage in Puumala by lake Saimaa for the summer. Already driving there the scenery was magnificent, and the view wasn't bad at the cottage either.

Mökki, sauna ja pihapiiri olivat moitteettomassa kunnossa ja kokonaisuus oli varsin idyllinen. Kuten mökillä pitää ollakin (ehkä idyllinen ei tosin ole se sana, joka kuvaa omaa mökkiämme...). Varsinkin laituri oli aivan huippu ja aiheutti kateuden pistoksen Sampassa, kun lähetin hänelle kuvan siitä.

The cottage, sauna and yard were in impeccable condition and on the whole the place was very idyllic (perhaps idyllic isn't the word to describe our own cottage...). Especially the jetty was fantastic and gave Samppa twinges of jealousy, when I sent him a picture of it.

Mökissä oli paljon hauskoja yksityiskohtia, kuten kuvassa oleva lamppu (Ja tänään huomasin, että lempi kiinalaisessa ravintolassani Happy Food Gardenissa on samat lamput! En ole koskaan ennen huomannut tätä seikkaa, vaikika käyn ravintolassa varsin usein! Tänään vain satuin jostain syystä katsomaan ylös...).

The cottage had many fun details, lik ethe lamp in th epicture (And today I noticed, that my favorite Chinese restaurant Happy Food Garden has the same lamps! I've never noticed this before, even though I go to that restaurant a lot! Today I just happened to look up...).

Ensimmäinen iltamme Puumalassa sujui onneksi rauhallisissa merkeissä, hyvän ruoan ja saunomisen merkeissä ja vain maltillisesti viiniä siemaillen. Olimme nukkumassa puolilta öin.

Our first evening at Puumala was luckily a calm and relaxed one with good food, a sauna and just a moderate amount of wine. We were in bed by midnight.

Kuvan kolmen litran vesikannu oli koko viikonlopun aikana pöydällä ja sitä täytettiin ahkerasti. Onneksi. Vesikin on välillä ihan hyvä juoma...

The three liter water jug in the picture was on the table all weekend and it was refilled often. Luckily. It's also good to drink water now and again...

Iltaleipä oli kehitelty Puumalan mökillä edellisenä viikonloppuna. Yksi leipä sisältää seuraavat ainekset: puolitettu siivu sekaleipää, guacamolea, tulista tomaattisalsaa, juustokastiketta, punasipulia, kirsikkatomaatin puolikkaita, 2 siivua juustomakkaraa, sinappia, mustapippuria ja juustoraastetta (unohdin ehkä jotain...). Aika leipä siis! Koko komeus vielä uuniin, kunnes juusto suli ja sai hieman väriä. En tiedä, miten kaikki tämä oikein mahtui yhdelle leipäviipaleelle (tai oikeastaan puolikkaalle) mutta sulanut juustoraaste kai piti kaiken kasassa ja syöminenkin onnistui aika vaivatta. Leipä oli tietenkin aivan valtavan herkullinen ja ihanan tulinen, kiitos hot tomato salsan. Tosin leipä oli ehkä hieman liian hot ystäväni veljelle, joka oli ensimmäisen illan kansamme mökillä. Hän ei ole "tabasco aikakauden lapsia" kuten vaatesuunnittelun opettajani Matti Seppänen kuvaili aikoinaan sukupolveani (hän oli käynyt Kipsarissa syömässä vuosikurssini tekemän lounaan ja meinannut läkähtyä chiliin).

The warm sandwiches we had as and evening snack had been developed the weekend before at the Puumala cottage. One sandwich includes the following ingredients: a halved slice of bread, guacamole, hot tomato salsa, cheese dip, red onion rings, halved cherry tomatoes, 2 slices of cheese flavored sausage, mustard, black pepper and grated cheese (I perhaps forgot something...). Quite a sandwich! Then the whole thing was put in the oven until the cheese began to melt and brown a bit. I don't know how all this fit on one slice of bread (or half of one actually) but I guess the melted rated cheese kept it all together and it was even pretty easy to eat. The sandwich was of course delicious and wonderfully hot, thanks to the hot tomato salsa. Although the sandwich may have been a bit too hot for my friend's brother, who spent the first night at the cottage with us. He isn't "A Child of the Tabasco generation" as my fashion design teaches Matti Seppänen described my generation back in the day (he had gone to Kipsari to eat when my year had made lunch and he had almost choked on all the chili).

Aamulla ajoimme Puumalan kautta Mikkeliin, jossa ystäväni kävi hoitamassa työasioita.

In the morning we drove via Puumala to Mikkeli, where my friend had some work to do.

Puumalasta löytyy viehättävä Kahvila Soroppi, jossa oli hauska valokyltti oven päällä. Soroppi on "kahvi"
paikallisella murteella. Onneksi ystäväni, joka on lähtöisin lähialueelta, selvensi asiaa minulle. Muuten ei kyllä sana "soroppi" olisi minulle millään auennut!

There was a charming cafe in Puumala called Kahvila Soroppi. There was a cute illuminated sign above the door. Soroppi is "coffee" in the local dialect. Luckily my friend, who is from that part of Finland, cleared that matter up for me. Otherwise the word "soroppi" would not have meant anything to  me. 

Mikkelissä kävin uudessa kauppakeskus Stellassa sillä aikaa, kun ystäväni hoiti työasiansa. Kauppakesku oli hieno ja siellä oli tietenkin kaikki ne liikkeet, joita tällaisissa kauppakeskuksissa yleensä on. Lisäksi löytyi pieni kauppahalli. Olisin mielelläni syönyt lounassalaatin, mutta näköjään Mikkelistä on mahdotonta sellaista saada. Mikkelissä syödään soppalounasta! Joka ikisessä ravintolassa - siis joka ikisessä - ja kahvilassa tarjottiin lounaaksi keittoa, johon toki kuului pieni salaattipöytä mutta kattavaa salaattibuffettia ei kyllä mistään löytynyt. Eräs kahvila tarjosi voileipäkakkupaloja! Vitriini oli täynnä erilaisia voileipäkakkuja, joita sitten leikattiin asiakkaille. En ole koskaan ennen nähnyt vastaavaa. harmi, että voileipäkakkuvitriinistä ei ole kuvaa!

In Mikkeli I visited the new Stella shopping center while my fried did her job thing. The shopping center was very smart and had all the usual shops a shopping center like that has. There was also a small market hall there. I would have very much liked to eat a salad for lunch, but evidently that is an impossibility in Mikkeli! They eat soup in Mikkeli for lunch! Every single restaurant - and I mean every single one - and cafe served soup for lunch! you also got some salad with the soup but there wasn't a good salad buffet to be found anywhere. One cafe served traditional Finnish sandwich cake by the slice! The showcase was stock full of different sorts of sandwich cakes, and they cut slices of them for the customers. I've never seen anything like it before and I'm so sorry I haven't got a picture of it!

Ehdimme vielä kalaanikin, ennen kuin viikonlopun varsinaiset riennot alkoivat (siis ystäväni kalasti ja itse olin mukana veneessä...).

We even had time to go fishing before the actual activities of the weekend began (or my friend fished and I just came along for the ride...).

Ja sitten ne riennot alkoivat!

And so the activities commenced!

Ainakin pohjustimme niitä illan rientoja tuhdeilla eväillä. Grillissä valmistu makkaraa, joiden kanssa söimme pestoperunoita (tai palomiehenperunoita...). Herkullista ja helppoa: keitetyt uuden perunat halkaistaan ja sekoitetaan peston kanssa. Valmis! Täytyy kokeilla mökillä (Samppa sanoi heti, että hän voi sitten syödä ne uudet perunat ihan sellaisinaan... tyypillistä!).

At least we had a hearty meal before the evening. We grilled some sausage and had them with pesto potatoes (or Fireman's Potatoes...). Delicious and easy to make: halve boiled new potatoes and mix with pesto. ready! I have to try this at our cottage (Samppa immediately said he can just have his new potatoes plain... typical).

Ja mökilläkin tyyli pitää: espressoa ja limongelloa. 

Illan kohokohta oli lähtö kylille, eli Puumala Cityyn. Unohdan aina, mikä etu siinä on, että mökki sijaitsee mantereella: taksi tulee suoraan pihaan ja vie mihin vain illanviettoon. Ei tarvita venekuskeja, pelastusliivejä eikä muuta. Tosin taksin saanti oli hieman ongelmallista. Yksi soitettu taksi odotti pihassa talon takana hetken, antamatta mitään merkkiä itsestään ja häipyi sitten, kun istuimmekin sisällä mökissä emmekä päivystäneet pihalla. Seuraavaa taksiin kuitenkin pääsimme ja suuntasimme kohti Puumala nro. 1 menomestaa, Ravintola Hovia!

Even at the cottage, things are done in style: espresso and limongello.

The hign point of the evening was going to Puumala. I always forget what an advantage having a cottage on the mainland is: a taxi comes straight to your yard and takes you anywhere you want to go to spend the evening. You don't need a person to drive the boat or life vests or anything else. Although actually gettin  the taxi was a bit problematic. One taxi we called waited in the yard behind the cottage without letting us know he was there and then he just left, while we were waiting inside the cottage. Luckily we managed to get another taxi and we headed for the number one place to go in Puumala, Ravintola Hovi!

Hovissa esiintyi lauantai-iltana Sani. En ole koskaan ollut Aikakone-fani (vaikka tunnen yllättävän monta heidän kappaletta, kuten illan aikana ilmeni...) enkä edes tiennyt, että Sani tekee soolouraa. Alku ei näyttänyt ihan lupaavalta Hovissa, jossa oli kyllä aika paljon porukkaa mutta meidän lisäksi vain neljä muuta naista. Oma neljän hengen ryhmä siis piristi paikkaa huomattavasta, varsinkin kun tömähdimme tanssilattialle. Ilta oli melko vauhdikas siitä eteenpäin. Olin vannonut, että en tanssi mitään paritansseja, koska en osaa ollenkaan. Mutta Hovin kaltaisessa paikassa paritanssilta ei voi välttyä, varsinkin jos naispuolisista tanssipartnereista on lievästi sanottuna pulaa. No, kai se jotenkin sujui...

Drinkkipuoli on Hovissa ihan omaa luokkaansa. Laku oli suosituin drinkki. Voi unohtaa salmarit ja fisut, Puumalassa juodaan lakua. Mieleenpainuvan drinkin valmisti nuori baarimikko, joka sai meiltä vapaat kädet: Pernod ja banaanilimu! Uh, voi sitä aika perso viinalle olla mutta tätä en voinut juoda. Jätin drinkin vaivihkaa sivupöydälle jossain vaiheessa. Seuraava koetinkivi oli kuohuviinin tarjoilu. Annoimme henkilökunnalle ohjeita coolerista ja jäistä ja laseista ja lopuksi juoman kaatotavasta. Ginikin oli baarista hukassa, kunnes sitä löytyi jostain jemmasta! Sambucaa pyysimme tilaamaan varastoon runsaasti kesää varten. Hyvä siitä Hovista vielä tulee asiantuntemuksemme avulla (olimme varmasti henkilökunnan mieloestä tosi rasittavia)!

Ilta oli kuitenkin hieno. En todellakaan muista, koska olisin tanssinut niin paljon (ja onneksi muutakin, kuin paritansseja...).

Sani was performing at Hovi on Saturday evening. I've never been an Aikakone fan (although I realized during the evening, that I know quite a few Aikakone songs...) I didn't even know Sani was pursuing a solo career. The whole thing wasn't looking very promising at Hovi to begin with. There were quite a lot of people there but beside us, there were only four other women there. our own little group of four livened the place up considerably, especially when we hit the dance floor. The evening pretty much took off from there. I had vowed not to do any couple dancing, because I can't do it at all. But in a place like Hovi, it's impossible to avoid it, especially when there is a shortage of women dance partners, to say the least. Well, I managed it somehow...

There was something to be desired drink-wise at Hovi. Licorice schnapps was the drink of the moment. You can forget salty licorice and Fisherman's Friend shots, They drink licorice in Puumala. The most memorable drink of the evening was prepared by a young bar tender, when we gave him a free hand to do what he wanted: Pernod and banana soda! Ugh, I can drink with the best of them but this i could not get down. I quietly left the drink on a side table at some point. The next test was  serving sparkling wine. We gave directions about the cooler, the ice the glasses and finally pouring techniques! There was also no gin to be found at the bar, until someone found a stash somewhere! we also gave directions to order lots of Sambuca for the coming summer season. Hovi will be just fine in the future, thanks to our expertise (I'm sure the personnel thought we were really tiring)!

But it was a great evening. I seriously don't remember when I've danced that much (and luckily not couples dancing too much...).

The sun was already rising as w e got back to the cottage.

Aamuisen luontoihme-hetken jälkeen aliotimme ihanna chillailu-lauantain.

After the nature wonder of the morning we got down to some serious Saturday chilling.

Ja voiko chillailu-lauantai paremmin alkaa, kuin vaaleanpunaisella samppanjalla ja hanhenmaksaleivillä?!

And can there be a better way to start chilling, than pink champagne and foie gras sandwiches?!

Musan soidessa todella söpöstä bluetooth-kaijuttimesta(viikonlopun teema todella oli pinkki!) valmisti emäntämme aivan mielettömän herkullista lohta savustuspöntössä.

Our hostess prepared some seriously delicious salmon in the smoker, while we listened to music from the cute bluetooth loudspeaker (the theme of the weekend really was pink!).

Muuta ei tavittu lisäksi, kuin uusia perunoita ja salaattia.

Nothing more was needed than new potatoes and salad. 

Kahvin kansaa nautimme valmistamiani brownieita (resepti blogissa myöhemmin).

With coffee we had brownies baked by me (recipe later...).

Chillailu onnistu niin hyvin, että loppuillasta raukea katse piti peittää aurinkolaseilla! Mutta hauskaa oli koko ajan ja kaikilla (yksi henkilö puuttuu kuvasta).

Upea pimuviikonloppu! Uusi paikka tuli katsastettua, tapasin vanhoja uusia tuttuja. Ruoka ja seura oli erinomaista ja vauhdilta ja vaarallisilta tilanteiltakaan ei vältytty (hyvällä tavalla)! Tosin ehkä tämä juhannus tulee hieman liian nopeasti heti perään... Vastahan tässä on tosiaan toivuttu edellisestä viikonlopusta!

Chilling worked so well, that as the evening wore on, I had to cover my drowsy eyes with shades! But everyone had a great time all evening (one person is missing from the photo).

A great weekend with the girls! I got to know a new place and meet old and new acquaintances. The food and company was excellent and we even had some fast and furious moments (in a good way)! Although, I must say Midsummer comes a bit too soon after the girl's weekend... I've just barely recovered!
