Illallinen Ystävien kanssa/Dinner With Friends

Kutsuimme lauantaina pitkästä aikaa ystäviä illalliselle. Emme näe monia ystäviä läheskään niin paljon, kuin toivoisimme mutta aina välillä ryhdistäydymme ja niin siis pidimme pienet illalliset ystäväpariskunnalle keväisissä merkeissä.

It has been a while since we've had friend over for a meal but now we ha friends over for dinner last Saturday. We don't see many of our friends nearly as often as we'd like to so now we had a small dinner for friends to celebrate spring.

Samppa kunnostautui tekemällä alkupalaksi katkarapuvoileipiä. Leipien pohjana oli wasabimajoneesi, jossa tuntui wasabi olevan pääosassa ja manjoneesi lähinnä statistina! Leivät olivat kyllä herkullisia ja tilli antoi niihin myös mukavasti makua. Aina välillä vain joku hieman haukkoi henkeä, kun kunnon wasabitujaus sattui kohdalle.

Samppa excelled in making shrimp sandwiches as starters. The base for the sandwiches was wasabi mayonnaise, and it seemed that the wasabi had the star, whereas the mayo had the supporting role! The sandwiches were very delicious and the dill also tasted wonderful. It was just that every now and then someone would catch their breath, when they happened to bite into some serious wasabi bits in the mayo.

Hyvin ne alkupalaleivät kuitenkin tekivät kauppansa.

But the starters disappeared very fast.

Päivä oli aurinkoinen ja keväinen ja kaipasin väriä kattaukseen. Kaivoin kaapista Kristiina Isolan 1992 Marimekolle suunnittelemasta "Kivi" kuosista tehdyn pöytäliinan. Minulla on paljon Marimekon kankaista tehtyjä pöytäliinoja ajalta, jolloin olin Tunturikadun ja Tapiolan liikkeissä osa-aikaisena myyjänä. Juuri silloin yhdeksänkymmentä luvulla. Kaikki ne pöytäliinat vain kovat kovin pieniä nykyiseen ruokapöytäämme. Mutta nyt kun meitä ruokailijoita oli vain neljä jä jatkettava pöytä oli pienimmillään, oli "Kivi" pöytäliina juuri sopiva. Kaivoin esille kaapeista kaikki turkoosit astiat, jotka löysin ja niistä sitten syntyi suht yhtenäinen kattaus. Oranssinkeltaista löytyi kattaukseen kovin vähän, mutta sentään yksi lasituikku ja muoviset salaattiottimet.

The day was sunny and vernal and I wanted some color in my table setting. I dug out and old table cloth designed for Marimekko by Kristiina Isola in 1992 called "Kivi". I have many tablecloths made from Marimekko fabric from the time I worked part time at the Marimekko shops in Tunturinkatu and Tapiola in the nineties. All those tablecloths are very small though to use now as our extendable dining table can be quite large now. But now as there were only four of us we could keep the table small and the "Kivi" tablecloth was just the right size. I also dug out all our turquoise dishes we had in the cupboards and I managed to put together a fairly uniform table setting. Sunny yellow is a color that we don't really have, but I managed to find one glass lantern and some plastic salad servers.

Päätin myös tarjota ruokaryypyn illallisella, sopihan viime joulun Absolut juhlapullo kattaukseen täydellisesti (pullon juhlapaketissa oli jopa sitä keltaista...). Yhtenä päivänä Samppa myös huomasi, että Absolut Vodka- sanojen viimeiset kirjaimet muodostavat ihan oman, uuden sanan, kun lahjapussia katsoo tietystä kulmasta...!

I also decided we'd have a schnapps with dinner. Last Chritmas' Absolut gift bottle fit the colors of the table setting perfectly (it even had yellow...). One day Samppa also noticed, that the last letters in the words Absolut and Vodka make up quite a new word, when looked at a certain angle ("lutka" = "slut")...!

Söimme jälleen kreppejä! Ehkä nyt alkaa jo riittää vähäksi aikaa, olihan tämä jo kolmas kerta, kun syömme kreppejä miltei samoilla täytteillä lyhyen ajan sisällä. Mutta herkullisiahan krepit vain ovat ja sitä paitsi niin ihanaa tarjottavaa isäntäväelle. Selvisimme varsinaisena juhlapäivänä hyvin vähällä vaivalla, koska täytteet oli valmistettu edellisenä päivänä. Ostimme myös letut valmiina, mikä on hyvin järkevää, jos ruokailijoita on enemmän kuin kaksi. Sitten vain täytimme krepit noin puoli tuntia ennen vieraiden saapumista ja lykkäsimme ne uuniin vartti ennen ruokailua ja, avot, illallinen oli hoidettu. Tarjosimme vain vihreää salaattia ja tapenadea kreppien kera, eli tällä kertaa herkullinen ateria todellakin syntyi hyvin helposti.

We had crepes again! Perhaps we've now has enough of them for a while. After all, this was the third time we've had them with the same fillings in a short period of time. But they are so delicious, after all. and so easy to serve. We managed without too much fuss on the day of the dinner party, because the fillings had been made the day before. We also bought the pancakes ready-made, which is smart if there are more than two people eating crepes. Then we just filled the crepes a half an hour before the guests arrived and popped them in the over fifteen minutes before sitting down to the table, and voilà!, dinner is served. we served only green salad and tapenade with the crepes, so this time a delicious dinner was truly made with minimum fuss.

Jälkiruokana oli vaniljajäätelöä, mangosorbettia ja mansikkahilloketta. En ehtinyt saada kuvaa kylmästä jälkiruoasta. Hyvin pian kristallinen tarjoilumalja olikin tyhjä. Ja hyvin pian lasinen tarjoilumalja oli myös säpäleinä! Johonkin se kolahti ja yhtäkkiä kaunis kristallikulho oli palasina. Harmi. Kulho oli vanha. Mutta näitä sattuu, ei sille mitään voi. Elättelen myös toiveita siitä, että saisin kulhon jotenkin liimattua vielä kasaan. Palaset ovat kuitenkin aika suuria. Ihan uskomatonta oli sitten se, että seuraavana iltana, kun laitoin tiskejä takaisin kaappeihin, rikoin sitten itse kuvassa näkyvän kulhon, jossa on mansikkahilloketta! Sekin vain kolahti toiseen lasikulhoon ja osa jalasta lähti irti.

Ehkä meidän pitäisi käyttää vain jotain metalliastioita...

We had vanilla ice cream, mango sorbet and strawberry compote for dessert. I didn't have time to take any pictures of the dessert. very quickly the crystal serving bowl was quite empty. And very quickly after that the pretty crystal bowl was in pieces! It just somehow banged against something and broke. What a shame. The bowl was quite old. But these things happen, they can't be helped. I'm also hoping I might still be able to glue the bowl together somehow. The pieces are quite big. And believe it or not, the next evening, as I was putting away some dishes, I broke the bowl in the picture with the strawberry compote!That too just knocked against another glass bowl and the bottom broke off.

Perhaps we should just start using metal dishes or something...

Kauniit kahvikupit ovat olleet joululahja Sampan siskolta joskus vuosia sitten. Käytän niitä aivan liian harvoin, mutta nyt ne sopivat värikkääseen teemaan. Konjakkilasit ovat taas lahja Sampan vanhemmilta ja ne ovat niin suuret, että mitan käyttäminen on aivan välttämätöntä konjakkia annosteltaessa. Muuten lasiin kaataa huomaamattaan vaikka kuinka paljon tätä jaloa juomaa ja lopputulos onkin sitten yleensä aika kehno...

Ja kuten usein käy, osasivat nytkin jotkut noudattaa yhden snapsin(ja konjakin) sääntöä ja toiset eivät! Ja jotkut jaksoivat lähteä reippaasti sunnuntaina kummipojan 2-vuotis syntymäpäiville ja toiset eivät. Ainakaan ihan heti...

The pretty coffee cups were a Christmas present from Samppa's sister years ago. I use them far too seldom but now they fit the colorful theme well. The brandy glasses on the other hand are a present from Samppa's parents and they are so big, that you definitely need a dispenser to measure out the cognac. Otherwise you wind up pouring in too much and the end result is usually pretty bad...

And as is often the case, some people were able to observe the one schnapps (and cognac) rule this time too and others were not! And some people were able to go to their godson's second birthday party on Sunday, while others were not. At least not from the start...
