Syysloma/Autumn Break

Syyslomaviikko on nyt sitten ohi. Pidin syyslomaa ensimmäisen kerran kymmeneen vuoteen. Eikä se mikään pöllömpi juttu ollutkaan, aiemmin siihen ei vain aikataujen suhteen ollut mitenkään mahdollisuutta. Nyt hieman kevyemmällä työmäärällä oli loma täysin toteutettavissa oleva asia. Kai kuitenkin - vaikka en ole suinkaan täysin samaa mieltä - on totta se, että kun yksi ovi sulkeutuu, avautuu toinen ikkuna (vai miten se nyt menikään...).

Toivuimme siis ensin sukujuhlista sunnuntain ja suuntasimme kohti Kaukalosaarta maanantaina.

The autumn break week is over now. I was able to take a week´s holiday now for the first time in ten years. Not a bad thing at all, it´s just that earlier it has been impossible to fit a holiday into a very tight schedule. Now with a slightly lighter workload, autumn break was totally doable. Perhaps it is so, after all - although I do not totally agree - that when one door closes, another window opens (or however it goes...).

So first on Sunday we recovered from the family gathering and headed for Kaukalosaari on Monday.

Järvimaisemat olivat juuri niin syksyisen upeat, kuin olettaa sopii. Vesi oli peilityyntä, eikä ilmakaan ollut kovin kylmä. Ilman kelluntahaalaria selvittiin menomatkasta. Vettä oli veneen pohjalla aika lailla ja sitä sitten sain tyhjennellä tovin ämpärillä, ennen kuin pääsimme matkaan. Ja jostain kumman syystä oli vene myös täynnä mutaa! Liekö maata lentänyt viereiseltä Mobilian laajennustöiden työmaalta, mutta mutaa oli aivan mahdotonta saada kokonaan putsattua veneestä.

The lake view was exactly as magnificent as it should be in autumn. The water was as placid as the surface of a mirror and the weather wasn´t too cold. There was no need to put on the flotation suit at all. There was quite a lot of water inside the boat and it took me a while to empty it out before we were able to depart from the harbor. And for some strange reason the boat was full of mud! Perhaps some soil had found it´s way inside the boat from the nearby Mobilia building site, but it was impossible to get all the mud out of the boat.

Sää oli sen verran harmaa ja kolea kutenkin, että saavuttuamme saaren eivät ulkoaktiviteetit pahemmin houkutelleet. Olimme sitä paitsi suunnilleen laittaneet mökin talviteloille edellisllä kerralla, joten mitään pakollista tekemistä ei oikeastaan ollut. Saatoimme siis keskittyä ruokailuun (ja juomailuunkin...).

Tämänkertainen helppo mökkieväs oli kanaa, majoneesia ja herneitä kääräistyinä tortillalettuun. Ammattivalittajamme Samppa oli saanut Viikin Prismasta kaksi grillattua broileria hyvitykseksi siitä, että aiempi ostamamme broileri osoittautui rutikuivaksi, kun sen kääreestä esille otimme. Harvoin valittaminen tuottaa mitään tulosta - ehkä pahoitteluja lukuunottamatta - saatika, että saisi jotain korvausta. Nyt kuitenkin joku ystävällinen sielu Prismassa otti asian ihan käsittelyyn ja lahjoitti meille vielä kaksi broileria! Ihan pienestäkin eleestä voi jäädä mukava fiilis!

Joten meillä oli yllin kyllin broileria, mille piti tehdä jotain. Tortillawrapit olivat todella hyviä ja helppoa ruokaa ensimmäiselle mökki-iltapäivälle.

The weather was quite grey and chilly when we reached the island though, so we didn´t much feel like doing any outdoor activities. And anyway, we had pretty much done everything that needs doing for the winter the time before, so there wasn´t even any actual work to do. We could thus concentrate on eating (and drinking too...).

This time our evening snack was chicken, green peas and mayo wrapped in tortillas. Our professional complainer Samppa had gotten two grilled chickens from Viikki Prisma as compensation for the really dried up grilled chicken we had bought from there a while back. Complaining seldom bring about any real results - apart from perhaps and apology - but this time some kind soul at Prisma took it upon themselves to react to Samppa´s complaint and gave us a gift of two grilled chickens! Even a small gesture like that can make you feel good!

So we had plenty of grilled chicken we had to do something about. The tortilla wraps were ally good and easy snacks for the first evening at the cottage.

Seuraavakaan päivä ei valjennut mitenkää aurinkoisena, joten nukuttuamme pitkään ja jatkoimme samaa rentoa meininkiä, kuin edellisenäkin päivänä eli keskityimme ruokailuun (mutta nyt ei enää juomailuun...).

The next day did not dawn very sunny either, so we slept in and continued with the same laid back spirit as the day before. We again concentrated on food (but not on drink anymore...).

Päivälliseksi valmistui grillissä aasialaistyylisiä hampurilaispihvejä. Kirjaan reseptin blogiin myöhemmin mutta voin jo tässä sanoa, että punaisella Thai currytahnalla ja pähkinäkastikkeella maustetut hampurilaiset olivat herkullisia, varsinkin höystettynä marinoiduilla porkkanasuikaleilla, chilimajoneesilla ja tuoreella mintulla ja korianterilla!

For dinner we grilled Asian style hamburgers on the barbecue. I´ll post the recipe later but I can already say, that the burgers seasoned with Thai red curry paste and peanut sauce were delicious, especially with marinated carrot, chili mayonnaise and fresh mint and coriander!

Saunan jälkeen teimme sitten vielä iltapalaksi lettuja! Olen varmaan lihonut viisi kiloa tämän loman aikana. En uskalla mennä lähellekään vaakaa, ennen kuin ensi viikolla hieman taas kevennän ruokavaliota ja jatkan kuntokuuria.

After the sauna we made pancakes for an evening snack! I´ve probably gained five kilos during this holiday. I don´t dare go near the scales, until I try to get back to a slightly lighter diet next week and start exercising again.

Illat vain pimenevät täthän aikaan vuodesta niin nopeasti, että päivät tuntuvat kovin lyhyiltä. Päivät tuntuisivat tosin pidemmiltä - ja olisivatkin sitä - jos ei nukkuisi puoleenpäivään asti...

The evenings get dark so quickly this time of year, that the days just seem so very short. Of course the days would seem longer - and actually would be so - if we didn´t sleep until noon...

Samppa löysi matalasta rantavedestä käärmeen! Onneksi vain kumikäärmeen. Joku on varmaan sen laittanut laiturille jonnekin, joskus, ja se on sitten ajan mittaan ajautunut mutaiseen rantaamme. Vaikka käärme oli kuminen, oli se kuulemma sätkinyt vastaan, kun Samppa kiskoi sen mudasta kuivalle malle. Se saa nyt lepäilla talven yli soutuveneen päällä.

Samppa found a snake in the shallow water! Luckily it was just a rubber snake. Someone has probably put it on a jetty somewhere, sometime, and it has drifted along to our beach over time. Even though the snake was rubber, it had felt like it was slithering, when Samppa pulled it out of the mud on to dry land. Now it can rest on top of the rowing boat over the winter.

Ennen lähtöämme mökiltä, söimme vielä päiväruoaksi pyttipannun, tällä kertaa halloumin ja sitruunalohkojen kera. Halloumi sopi pyttikseen yllättävän hyvin ja antoi ruoalle soivasti suolaisuutta. 

Lähdön hetkellä ilma muuttui sitten vähän myskyisäksi, joten vedin kelluntahaalarin päälle ja laitoin hupunkin tiiviisti päälle. Ihan fiksu veto. Minulla oli lämmin ja selvisin Mobilian rantaan kuivana. Samppa ei tietenkään suostununt mitään haalareita päällensä laittamaan ja hän olikin sitten aivan jäässä ja toppatakki litimärkänä, kun saavuimme satamaan.

Mökkeilykausi oli sitten tällä erää tässä. Nostimme veneen trailerille (yllättävän kätevästi ja nopeasti) ja hinasimme sen taas Rajasaareen. Ehkä seuraavalla kerralla mökkeilemme taas helmikuussa hiihtolomalla. 

Before we left the cottage, I made a fry-up, this time with halloumi and lemon wedges. The halloumi was very good in the fry-up and it gave the dish a nice saltiness.

As we were leaving, the weather turned a bit stormy, so I pulled on my flotation suit and fastened the hood on tightly too. A smart move. I was warm and made it to Mobilia nice and dry. Samppa of course refused to wear his suit and he was freezing with his padded jacket wet through, when we got to the harbor.

The cottage season is thus over for now. We got the boat on to the trailer (surprisingly quickly and efficiently) and towed it to Rajasaari yet again. Perhaps    we´ll go to the cottage next time during the skiing holiday in February.
