Glögijuhlat 2014/The Glögi Party 2014

Viime lauantaina oli jälleen aika pitää perinteiset glögijuhlamme. Juhlat täyttivät tänä vuonna 25 vuotta! Emme tätä asiaa sen kummemmin kutsussa mainostaneet, mutta olemme todellakin järjestäneet juhlat nyt 25 kertaa. Voi siis sanoa, että kyseessä on perinne.

Ehkä viiden vuoden päästä juhlistamme glögareiden 30-vuotis juhlaa jotenkin erityisesti.

Last Saturday it was again time to have our traditional glögi party. It was the party's 25th anniversary! We didn't advertise this in any special way on the invitation, but we actually have had the party 25 times now. One can safely say this is a true tradition.

Perhaps five years from now we'll do something special for the 30th anniversary.

Päätimme jo viime vuonna - varmaan jo viime glögareiden jälkeisenä iltana - että tämänvuotinen teema olisi Suomi! Meillä on ollutkin vaikka mitä muita teemoja Turkista Intiaan, mutta ei vielä koskaan suomalaista joulua. Tämä oli Sampan erityinen toive. Hän sanoi, että koska hän ei käy töissä, ei hänellä myöskään ole firman pikkujouluja tai joululounaista, jossa tarjoiltaisiin perinteinen, suomalainen joulupöytä. Luulen myös, että Samppa inspiroitui sisarensa miehen viimevuotisista syntymäpäivistä, jotka olivat samalla autokerhon pikkujoulut. Siellä tarjoiltiin myös perinteinen joulupöytä ja voi hyvin olla, että siitä se idea sitten lähti!

Mietin kovasti, mikä voisi olla sopiva aihe kutsukortille ja lopulta sen keksin eräästä kuvasta: himmeli! Ei uskoisi, että senkin aiheen kanssa voi homma lähteä ihan lapasesta, kun oikein ryhtyy väkertämään, mutta loppupeleissä vietin aika paljon aikaa liimailemalla kutsuihin kiiltäviä helmiä ja hopeisia kulmapaloja ja töpsöttelemällä punaista kimalletta havunoksiin. Onneksi sentään ostin valmiita korttipohjia ja kirjekuoria. Muuten kutsut eivät vieläkään olisi valmiita!

We already decided last year - probably the day after the last party - that the theme this year would be Finland! We've had all sorts of themes from Turkey to India, but never before have we had a Finnish Christmas theme. This was Samppa's special wish. He said, that as he does not work he never has the chance to attend and office Christmas party or a Christmas lunch, where a tradition Finnish Christmas buffet would be served. I also think, that Samppa was inspired by his brother-in-law's birthday last year, which was also a car club's Christmas party. They has a traditional Christmas buffet there and it may well be, that that's where the idea was born!

I tried to think hard what a suitable motif for the invitation would be, and then I saw it in a picture: a himmeli, a traditional Finnish Christmas decoration usually made from straw. One might not think one would get carried away with this theme, but once I got started I spent quite a bit of time gluing glitter beads and silver corner stickers on to the cards and dabbing glitter glue to the fur tree branches on the invitations. Luckily I at least bought ready-made card bases and envelopes. Otherwise the invitations would still not be ready!

Himmeli toistui sitten muuallakin juhlissa. Kuvassa himmeli, jonka tein punaisista mehupilleistä ja kattokruunun kristalleista.

The himmeli theme could be seen elsewhere too. The himmeli above is made from drinking straws and chandelier crystals. 

Löysin jopa Tokyon myyjäisistä himmelikorvikset, ihan sattumalta sen jälkeen, kuin olin jo kutsut lähettänyt! Kiitos Saara Jolkkonen, kruunasit glögari-lookini!

Kuten edellisinäkin vuosina, juhlien esivalmistelut pyörivät myös nyt ruoan ympärillä erittäin voimakkaasti. Tänä vuonna olikin hieman enemmän aikaa valmistella juhlia, kuin koskaan aikaisemmin ja ehdin tehdä koeversiot parista ruokalajista, joita en ollut aiemmin valmistanut. Tämä on ihan hyvä käytäntö, jos vain on aikaa mutta yleensä niin ei ole. Nyt siis kannatti nauttia siitä harvinaisesta tilanteesta, että sai keskittyä juhlien valmisteluihin kaikessa rauhassa.

I even found some himmeli earrings at the Tokyo fair, just by chance after I had already sent the invitations! Thank you Saara Jolkkonen, you put the final touch on my glögi party look.

As before, preparations for the party concentrated very much around the food aspect of things. This year there was actually a bit more time to prepare for the party, than ever before and I even had time to make test versions of some of the dishes I hadn't made before. This is a good practice, if you just have the time but usually you don't. So now we could enjoy a situation, where it was possible to concentrate on the preparations for the party at leisure.

The sweet potato marshmallow casserole was a new dish, which seemed to be popular with the guests.

Stuffed eggs were a hit from a few years back.

Oikeastaan meidän suomalainen joulumme muistutti aika lailla taannoista venäläistä joulua. Tämä kertoo siitä, kuinka lähellä maidemme ruokakulttuurit oikeastaan ovat.

Joulukinkku oli Sampan idea. Se oli oikein hyvä idea, vaikka en ihan tajunnut, kuinka hyvä! Oletin, että 8 kilon kinkusta jäisi jotakin tähteeksi - oikeastaan aika paljon - glögareiden jälkeen. Vaan ei! Jopa luu oli kaluttu loppuillasta. Tämä oli tietenkin hyvä asia! En halua missään nimessä, että ruokaa jäisi paljon yli. Ja tänä vuonna ei totisesti jäänytkään. Kymmeneltä oli parvekkeella viileässä enää yksi bataatti-vaahtokarkkilaatikko ja rosollia. Kaikki muu oli mennyt!

Actually our Finnish Christmas was very much like our Russian Christmas a few years ago. That just goes to show you, how similar the two countrieies' food culture actually is.

The Christmas ham was Samppa's idea. It was a very good idea, although I did not quite realize, how good! I thought that there would be something left over from the 8 kilo ham - quite a lot left over actually - after the glögi party. But no! it was almost gnawed to the bone by the end of the evening. This was of course a good thing! Under no circumstance do I want a lot of food to be left over from the party. And this year there was hardly any. At the there was only on sweet potato marshmallow casserole and some rosolli left. Everything else was gone!

Saimme jälleen tänä vuonna lahjaksi upean juuresveistoksen yläkerran naapuriltamme. Tämänvuotinen mestariteos oli tehty myskikurpitsasta ja se oli koristeltu pistaasinlehdillä (olikohan se niin...). Nyt ihan oikeasti keräämme porukan kasaan ja pyydämme naapuriltamme oppituntia! Siitä puhuttiin jo viime vuonna, mutta asia jäi. Nyt ei jää!

We got an awesome vegetable sculpture from out upstairs neighbor again this year. This year it was made from butternut squash and it was decorated with pistachio leaves (I think...). Now seriously, we'll get together a group of people and take sculpting lessons from our neighbor! We already talked about it last year, but nothing ever came of it. This time it will!

Saimme muutenkin paljon ihania tuliaisia ystäviltämme. Serkkuni tuoma amaryllis puhkesi tänään upeaan kukkaan.

We also got many other lovely presents from out friends. The amaryllis my cousin brought started blooming magnificently today.

Saimme myös upeimman valkoisen joulu tähden, jonka olen pitkään aikaan - jos koskaan - nähnyt!

We also got the most amazing white poinsettia I have ever seen in my life!

Tämänvuotiset juhlat olivat ehkä huimimmat koskaan. Rikoimme aiemman yleisöennätyksen: illan aikana luonamme oli 74 vierasta!!!! Ei toki ihan samaan aikaan, mutta ei kyllä paljon puuttunut. Huh! Kohta pitää hankkia isompi kämppä tai ainakin vuokrata suurempi juhlatila. Vielä mahdumme nippa nappa tähän asuntoon mutta jos vierasluku tästä kovasti kasvaa, emme mahdu liikkumaan enää. Nytkin teki tiukkaa.

Mutta sopu sijaa antaa ja perinteet jatkuvat. Mieskuoromme esitti taas serenadin emännälle, joka jälleen kerran huvittuneena seurasi tilannetta. Joko olen ryhtynyt siemailemaan glögiä vuosi vuodelta suurempia määriä, tai sitten kuoro kehittyy joka vuosi vähän enemmän. Ainakin omasta mielestäni laulu soi paremmin vuosi vuodelta. Tosin Oliverilla oli koko esityksen ajan sormet korvissa, joten...ehkä todellakin siemailen sitä glögiä aika paljon ennen kuin kohtaan illan kohokohdan!

This year's party was the most amazing ever. We broke the previous record for the amount of guests that arrived: there was a total of 74 guests during the evening!!!! Of course not all at the same time, but almost. Wow! We have to get a bigger apartment  or rent a bigger venue. We can still just about fir into this apartment but if the guest list gets any bigger, we won't be able to move around any more. Even now it was a bit difficult.

But the more the merrier and the traditions continue. Out male choir serenaded an amused hostess once again. Either I have started to drink more glögi before the performance during the years or the choir keeps getting a bit  better year by year. At least I think the singing gets slightly better each time. Although Oliver did have his fingers in his ears all through the performance, so...perhaps I do drink quite a bit of glögi before facing the high point of the evening!

Tänä vuonna serenadi laulettiin hieman aikaisemmin, kuin yleensä. Tämä tapahtuma kuitenkin aina rytmittää juhlia: aika ennen laulua (ruokailua ja juttelua) ja aika laulun jälkeen (jolloin juhlat varsinaisesti lähtevät vauhtiin). Niin nytkin. Illan viimeiset kolme tuntia kuluivat vauhdilla ja takuulla kohtuullisella volyymillä myös!

This year the serenade part of the evening was earlier than usual. The singing always sets a certain rythm for the party: the time before the song (eating and chatting) and the time after the song (when the party takes off). So it was now too. The last three hours of the party went by in a flash with quite a bit off volume too, I should think!

Toinen upea perinne on uusimman Absolut Vodka juhlapullon saaminen ystävältämme. Tätäkään pulloa ei saa myydä Alkossa. Se on aivan liian kiva ja kaunis, jotta sitä voitaisiin sallia! Johan joku voisi ostaa niitä useamman (ihan vain ulkomuodon takia) ja juoda itsensä kuoliaaksi, joten paras jättää koko juhlapullo valikoimista. Luultavasti blogikirjoituiksenikin poistetaan viranomaisten toimesta, kun näin pulloa ihan kuvan kera mainostan ja mainitsen sanan "vodka"...

Another fabulous tradition is receiving the newest Absolut Vodka party edition bottle from a friend. Also this bottle is not on sale in Alko. It is far too nice and pretty to be sold to consumers! Someone could even buy more than one bottle(just because it is pretty) and then drink themselves to death, so best not include the whole product in Alko's selection. Probably my post will also be removed by the authorities, as I am bold enough to thus advertise the bottle with pictures to boot, and I even mentioned the word "vodka"... (no-one outside of Finland will understand this part...).

Vielä sana puvustani. Koska illan teema oli Suomi, halusin suomalaisen suunnittelijan puvun.Toki olen itsekin suomalainen suunnittelija mutta nyt ainakin halusin jonkun muun suunnitteleman vaatteen ja niin käännyin hyvän ystävän ja kolleegan Mikko Niirasen puoleen. Hän suunnitteli ja ompeli minulle kauniin cocktailmekon mustasta villakankaasta, jossa oli hopeiset liituraidat. Mekon varsinainen juju oli olkaimet ja varsinkin selässä olevat ohuet nauhat. Valitettavasti missään kuvassa puku ei näy aivan niin upeana, kuin olisin toivonut, mutta jonkun käsityksen näistäkin otoksista saa. Puku keräsi valtavasti kehuja ja oli ihana päällä. Se ei kiristänyt tai puristanut mistään, olihan se tehty juuri mittojeni mukaan!

I must also say a few words about my dress. As the theme of the evening was Finland, I wanted a dress by a Finnish designer. Of course I myself am also a Finnish designer, but at least now I wanted a dress designed by someone else and so I turned to my friend and colleague, Mikko Niiranen. He designed  and sewed a beautiful cocktail dress for me made from black wool with silver pin-stripes. The special feature of the dress was the narrow halterneck strap and especially the thin straps in the back. Unfortunately there are no really good pictures of the dress in all its glory, but you can get some idea of it from the ones I do have. The dress received many complements and it was wonderful to wear. It of course fit perfectly, having been made-to-measure!

Kutsussa on kuitenkin mainittu, että juhlat loppuvat puoliltaöin ja niin ne suurimmaksi osaksi loppuvat tänäkin vuonna. Samppa tosin "kaappasi" pari naapuria vielä after hour partyyn alakertaan, mutta kun suurin osa vieraista oli lähtenyt, oli meitä enää kymmenkunta henkeä juttelemassa aamun tunneille asti.

It was mentioned in the invitation, that the party would be ending at midnight, and so it did for the most part. Samppa did "kidnap" a couple of neighbors from outside for the after party downstairs, but when most of the guests had left, there were only about ten of us left sitting and chatting until the morning hours.

Oli aika potkaista mahdottoman korkeat kengät (joissa oli tosin lesti, jonka kanssa pärjäsi) glögin tahrimalle lattialle ja vetää henkeä aikamoisen rallin jälkeen! Ja näin oli taas yhdet glögijuhlat pidetty. Kovasti niitä aina suunnitellaan ja odotetaan ja kun H-hetki koittaa, tuntuu melkein että ei ehdi hypätä mukaan, ennen kuin ne jo ovat ohi. Täällä pitäisi olla Downton Abbeyn koko henkilökunta, jotta voisin ihan oikeasti täysin keskittyä vieraisiini ja juhliin!! Onneksi meillä on kuitenkin ihana Aurora auttamassa keittiössä. Ilman häntä emme pärjäisi.

Ja kyllä, ensi vuoden teema on jo päätetty...

It was time to kick off my impossibly high heels (that did have a fit that was manageable) on to the glögi stained floor and give a sigh of relief after quite a party! And so another glögi party came and went. They are always planned with much enthusiasm and anticipated with high hope and then when the time comes, it almost feels as if you don't have time to get into the swing of things before the party is over. I should have the whole staff of Downton Abbey here helping me, in order to properly be able to concentrate on the guests and the party!! But luckily we have our wonderful Aurora to help us out in the kitchen. We could not cope without her.

And yes, next year's theme has already been decided...
